INTERVIEW WITH JIFFY, EMILOR, AND DAVE-O OF NIGHT COURT

[DD] For those of you who drink, what’s your drink of choice?

[Jiffy] People who choose to not drink alcohol still have drink choices tho don’t they? Alcohols choice: Tequila, current non-alcohol choice: Wong Lo Kat

[Dave-O] For many many years it was a Lucky Lager and a Jameson :) Now it’s soda water with a splash of whatever juice the bar has on hand :(

[DD] What is your favorite venue you’ve ever played?

[Jiffy] VERA

[Emilor] In 2009 my old band Devil Eyes played a semi-abandoned mall in Shreveport, Louisiana after playing my OTHER favourite venue Big D’s BBQ which was in a converted gas station. Big D also made the best BBQ I’ve ever had. If this is Night Court specific then it has to be our first show at the Leeside skatepark. That was a special day.

[Dave-O] I played a song (Deuce by KISS) with the Black Halos at CBGB’s … don’t know if I’d say it’s my favourite venue but it was pretty cool! Sorry for the lame answer but honestly we have played at so many rad rad places that attempting to pick one seems cruel (to me :)

[DD] What is your favorite food to eat on the road?

[Jiffy] $1000 Emily says shrimp

[Emilor] Always shrimp. Shrimp roulette ALWAYS.

[Dave-O] Sadly it is probably Starbucks impossible breakfast sandwich :(

[DD] What is the first song you learned to play along with on your respective instruments?

[Jiffy] Oh shit, on bass? Uh the theme from Night Court? I want that to be true but it might actually be Dr. Feelgood by Mötley Crüe which Dave taught me when we were in grade 9.

[Emilor] It was all of the songs in the first band I played drums in but the HARDEST cover I ever had to learn was Some Velvet Morning by Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra.

[Dave-O] I think it was And It Stoned Me by Van Morrison. My first guitar teacher was a folk dude.

[DD] The LP we put out together collects songs from your first two tapes and a lathe cut. What’s your favorite collection album from another band (I’m thinking albums like 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours by Green Day)?

[Jiffy] Buzzcocks’ Singles Going Steady

[Emilor] The Driving Stupid’s Asparagus Horror Story on Sundazed or Jackie Shane’s Any Other Way on Numero Group

[Dave-O] Monuments to Excess by Fuel. Life changing shit for me.

[DD] What does the title “Nervous Birds” mean?

[Jiffy] Not sure it means anything. Dave thought it sounded cool and I thought it went well with a drawing I did which became the artwork. Here’s an idea tho- what if we change the band name to Nervous Birds? Worked for Jerk With A Bomb (former name of our friends Black Mountain) and sorta worked for Toys That Kill (although they seem to be sorta going back to F.Y.P now?)

[Emilor] We all have anxiety and also Jiffy and Dave-O are from Calgary where there are a lot of magpies which is pretty neat.

[Dave-O] Thrumming with energy…but nervous energy. Like a flock of Bushtits.

[DD] Do you prefer playing music sober or buzzed?

[Jiffy] Sober or buzzed are both cool but I prefer to not be wasted as I can barely pass for technically proficient when I’m sober. Dave on the other hand used to get so drunk he couldn’t string together a sentence but could somehow still play guitar!?

[Emilor] Either or, but if buzzed only slightly otherwise my internal dialogue and intrusive thoughts will plague me for eternity.

[Dave-O] I used to be very good at playing blackout drunk (or so I’m told) and that was a lot of fun! I only play sober now and turns out that that is a lot of fun too! So it’s a tie :)

[DD] What is the best cover song of all time?

[Jiffy] Oh man, good question! All time?? That’s a mighty ask hmm maybe the theme from Wonder Years or Golden Girls? I obviously am profoundly influenced by 90s tv shows.

[Emilor] Rong’s cover of Lisa Lougheed’s Run With Us (famously the theme song for the Canadian animated show Raccoons) but now I’m in Rong (again) so that’s pretty cheeky of me…so I gotta say Harry Nilsson’s cover of Badfinger’s Without You.

[Dave-O] Oh man I have no idea but The Vindictives’ Party Time for Assholes is definitely the best (double 10”) cover album! Oh wait it’s Superchunk covering 100,000 Fireflies by The Magnetic Fields

[DD] It’s closing time at a bar full of your friends, there’s only time to play one more song on the jukebox. What do you play?

[Jiffy] GBV’s Salty Salute, for some reason I used to think the lyrics to the outro was “the party’s over” lol
