POST-RECORDING INTERVIEW WITH KEDDIE SMITH

[DD] What’s your drink of choice?

[KS] Anything with caffeine, I’m a stimulant addict.

[DD] Drunk Dial prohibits writing or rehearsing the cover before going into the studio, but did you prepare for the day of recording in any other way?

[KS] Honestly I prepared by doing my daily routine, getting hammered and making music. I’m not wasted much anymore but I’m always making songs on the spot so a task like drunk dial was like stealing candy from a baby.

[DD] Did you have any specific fears going into the studio? What ended up being the most difficult part?

[KS] I was living in the hood at the time and was mainly scared of pissing off my drug dealer neighbors, never really cared tho, they probably thought I had a murder dungeon from all the screaming they heard coming from my window.

The only fear I actually have of recording is losing the ability to know that a song is bad. When bad songs are all that escapes my brain I’ll hang the towel up, no sequels here!

[DD] Why did you choose to cover “I’m Glad” and “Turning Japanese”?

[KS] Captain Beefheart in my mind is an unstoppable force, we are lucky enough to live in a timeframe where he got the chance to press record and we still get to listen. I’m Glad plays in my head forever. I kissed my gf for the first time to that song.

Turning Japanese is a song that is so brushed over and so incredible. Hands down the hardest bass and guitar parts I’ve ever learned. I also really wanted to make Portland kids mad.

[DD] Do you prefer playing music sober or buzzed?

[KS] Nowadays I play every show not drunk, always stoned tho. Now drinking at a jam sesh is another thing, nothing beats jamming new songs and getting ripped.

Playing live shows drunk is cool starting out, but when you wake up in a parking lot then wake up again smashing your window cause you forgot your house keys it’s not as fun.

[DD] What is the best cover song of all time?

[KS] Most Led Zeppelin songs. Ultimate rip artists.

[DD] It’s closing time at a bar full of your friends, there’s only time to play one more song on the jukebox. What do you play?

[KS] Definitely Iggy Pop’s song Five Foot One.
