Drunk Dial #9 - Ditches
Post-recording interview with Ditches
[DD] Drunk Dial prohibits writing or rehearsing the cover before going into the studio, but did you prepare for the day of recording in any other way?
Ditches: Besides buying drinks, snacks and edibles we decided we wanted to cover a Swedish band who’ve influenced us in one way or another.
[DD] Did you have any specific fears going into the studio? What ended up being the most difficult part?
Ditches: Biggest fear was probably writer’s block and not getting it done in time. We usually get stuck in details and aren’t known for writing that fast. Studio time has always seemed way shorter than we’ve liked on previous recordings.
Most difficult part was probably to stay focused while on shrooms. They were intended to give a creative boost but turned out to be an obstacle since they made most of us unable to make decisions for a couple of hours.
[DD] Why did you choose to cover "Abra Cadaver" by The Hives?
Ditches: As mentioned before, we decided pretty early on that we wanted to cover a Swedish band that has shaped us in some way. We thought about bands like The Hives, Popsicle, Wannadies, etc. After narrowing it down we just tried to figure out what banger of a song we might be able to not butcher too much.
[DD] Do you prefer playing music sober or buzzed?
Ditches: Guess it’s pretty 50/50. Some us like to have a few drinks before a show and some of us never do, haha.
[DD] What is the best cover song of all time.
Lars: Teini-Pää with ”112” (ABBA - SOS).
Heard it when we played with them in Helsinki, Finland. They dedicated it ”to their Swedish friends”, not entirely sure if they meant us or not, haha.
Robin: Sekunderna - Dansar inte lika bra som sjömän (Gyllene Tider).
This song was one of my favorites when I was a kid. It’s made by one of the most commercially successful bands in Sweden so I was happily surprised when Sekunderna introduced it as “a song by the greatest punk band in Swedish history” five nights in a row playing with Sekunderna on tour.
Rasmus: Kendall Johansson - Blue Moon (Big Star)
Johan: Ramones - California Sun (The Rivieras)
Don’t know if it’s the best of all times, haha. There are so many great ones out there but I always come back to this one during summertime.
[DD] It's closing time at a bar full of your friends, there's only time to play one more song on the jukebox. What do you play?
Ditches: This one is so difficult. It all depends on the mood and the people around you. One song we can all agree on that always gets us going is Kjell Höglunds ‘Bland helgon skurkar och vanligt folk’. Funny, weird, melancholic and just awesome.
